Leaver Penalties are there to try and prevent players from dipping from games when they're losing because it's unfair to other players in the team. Like with everything in a live service game, there are always tweaks and changes so knowing how these penalties work is important - you don’t want to unintentionally be punished in the game.
Here are the penalties you'll receive if you leave a certain amount of matches in Unranked mode:
Games Left | Penalty |
1 out of your last 20 matches | A warning |
2-3 out of your last 20 matches | 5 minutes of no matchmaking |
4-5 out of your last 20 matches | 20 minutes of no matchmaking |
6-9 out of your last 20 matches | 4 hours of no matchmaking |
10+ out of your last 20 matches | 48 hours of no matchmaking |
As you can see from the table above, the more matches you leave, the higher the penalty you'll get.
There are no outright bans for leaving Unranked matches, but you can be put on up to 48 hours of suspension from matchmaking. Even leaving a few matches will leave you unable to matchmake for a while.
Here are the penalties you'll receive if you leave a certain amount of matches in Competitive mode:
Games Left | Penalty |
1 of your recent matches | 15 minutes of no matchmaking |
2 of your recent matches | 2 hours of no matchmaking |
3 of your recent matches | 8 hours of no matchmaking |
4 of your recent matches | 20 hours of no matchmaking |
5 of your recent matches | Competitive season ban |
10 throughout the season | Competitive season ban |
The penalties for Competitive mode are a lot harsher, with players being temporarily suspended whenever they leave any Competitive match.
Leaving one match will result in a 15-minute ban, with the penalties getting stronger if games are left repeatedly. There's also a rule in Competitive mode that will ban players for the rest of the current season if they leave 10 matches or more.
That’s all you need to know about Penalties in Overwatch 2 for both Competitive and Unranked. Remember that even if you unintentionally disconnect, it will count as you leaving the match, so be careful!
